Working with Children

Dear New South Wales ARM Members

late breaking news - the Child employment requirements have
( Comissioners Certificate ) been postponed until 01 May 2011

On 1 May 2010, the NSW Commission for Children and Young People will require that a police check be undertaken by self employed people who have direct unsupervised contact with children (under 18 years of age). The purpose of the police check is to identify eligibility to work with children.

Those who are eligible to work with children will be issued with the Commission’s Certificate for Self Employed People in Child-Related Employment. This legal requirement not only applies to ourselves, but to all self employed people who have direct unsupervised contact with children. This includes child minders, turors, school bus drivers, schools religious organisations etc.

In order to gain the Certificate, the Commission’s application form has to be lodged with a police station. The Certificate costs $80. Needs to be renewed every 3 years and has to be displayed in the clinic. It is a $2,200 fine if a self employed person has direct unsupervised contact with children, but does not have the Certificate.

There is no need for the Certificate if a ARM self employed member never has direct unsupervised contact with children. However, if there is any doubt about whether you will have unsupervised contact with children in the future, it is prudent to apply for the Certificate.

Information about applying for the Certificate is found on the Commission’s website:
