Description:

A dicovery in body therapy

Myopractic - The integration of soft tissues and the skeleton

Its history

Just over ten years ago a body therapist, Neil Skilbeck well versed in the sciences of chiropractic and osteopathy made a startling discovery. He was assessing a client’s pelvic girdle and noticed a common misalignment in the sacrum. He did not pay too much attention to it but proceeded to perform a cross fibre move to various muscles. Not being aware of any significant changes he later just happen to check the sacral area again. It was now positioned correctly. He naturally thought that he had made a mistake at the time, because according to his understanding misaligned bones create muscle problems not the other way round. However his mind was disturbed. Not long after this he decided to check his results more thoroughly and he was shocked at what he found. As soon as a muscular lesion was released it moved the misaligned bone instantly. “.Myopractic” was born.

This all happened in Australia, and it was the first time in body therapies that the soft tissues and skeleton had been integrated together forming a more complete form of bodywork now known as Myopractic. The integration uses well-accepted skeletal evaluation procedures, the speed and efficiency of cross fibre muscle moves and the fixation solutions offered by deep tissue work.

Its founder

Neil Skilbeck now 65 trained as a Naturopath and Chiropractic in the 1960”s and developed private practices in Morwell and Sale in Gippsland, Victoria. He was an understudy of Tom Bowen and learned other forms of soft tissue techniques. His discoveries of Myopractic principles came in the late 1990’s after he gave up his more accepted approach of direct thrusting on bones.

 Its principles

Today there are two main schools of thought in bodywork. Either you are a muscle or a bone therapist and your understanding of cause and effect is correspondingly different. The reality is that muscles are the prime movers of the skeletal system. By using existing physiological knowledge and observation the skeletal system’s misalignment tells us where the cause is and which muscle is involved in the process. Upon reassessment the skeletal positioning also becomes a measurement of the success or failure of the soft tissue treatment applied.

Myopractors are trained to indentify the key areas of strucural misalignment, determine the muscles responsible, and release muscular lesions.   Myopractic is capable of addressing a broad range of musculo-skeletal complaints (back, neck, shoulders, etc.), sporting injuries, headaches, migraines, respiratory difficulties and menstrual problems.

 The future body worker

The bone centered therapist makes the skeleton his or her primary target for all corrective procedures. The soft tissue worker disregards the skeleton altogether! It is only when a body worker appreciates the power of integration that they will then obtain greater success. The future body worker will not only understand the mechanical forces of the misaligned bones on nerves but also understand the action-reaction principle of muscles and bones.  It can be truly said that “the muscles are the masters and the bone is the slave, therefore muscles move bones”.

In the up and coming class

We will be demonstrating the technique and training participants in its application as an additional treatment method in their kit bag of tools.

Specific imbalances are explored and used as examples of how the technique works.
